Ormonde Offshore Wind Farm
Development of Ormonde saw the first deployment of 5MW turbines in UK waters.
Project background
Ormonde Offshore Wind Farm is located in the Irish Sea, around 10km from the coast at Barrow-in-Furness in the North-West of the UK.
In 2015, Vattenfall entered a partnership with Swedish pension group AMF. The partnership agreement means that AMF own a 49% share and Vattenfall continues to operate the wind farm as the majority shareholder. Vattenfall’s partnership strategy aims at supporting wind growth and the shift to renewables.
The Operations and Maintenance (O&M) facility for the wind farm is located on the dockside in Barrow Harbour. More than 800 UK jobs have been supported through the development, construction and operation of the project.
Innovation at Ormonde
Ormonde Offshore Wind Farm has innovation running through it, including:
- First commercial deployment of one of the world's largest 'market-ready' wind turbines, the 5MW REpower
- First commercial deployment of steel jacket foundations fabricated in Scotland by Burntisland Fabrication
- Longest 'single-pull' electricity export cable installation in UK waters (42km)
