Vattenfall signs agreements for Danish offshore wind projects

Vattenfall and the Danish Energy Agency have signed the final agreements for the offshore wind projects Hesselø and Holmsland, marking the next step in the development of two of Denmark's future offshore wind farms. The projects were awarded to Vattenfall in Denmark's latest offshore wind tender in August 2026.

The agreements were signed by Anne Mette Traberg, Country Manager Denmark at Vattenfall, and Adrian Lübbert, Director General of the Danish Energy Agency.

As part of the agreement, North Sea I Mid will be renamed Holmsland. The name change reflects the project's location off the coast of Holmsland and was agreed upon to give the project a more recognisable name.

Together, Hesselø and Holmsland will add at least 1.8 GW of offshore wind capacity to Denmark's energy system, supporting growing electricity demand and the country's long-term climate ambitions. Both projects are expected to be operational by 2032.

The projects build on Vattenfall’s strong offshore wind position in Denmark, where Vattenfall operates five offshore wind farms generating around 6.5 TWh of fossil-free electricity annually. This is complemented by Vattenfall's extensive offshore wind experience across Europe, with a portfolio spanning six markets and projects ranging from development to delivery and operation.

"As we deliver Nordlicht in Germany, progress Zeevonk in the Netherlands, and take the next steps with Hesselø and Holmsland in Denmark, we continue to build on our offshore wind experience and expertise across markets. Our focus remains clear: delivering competitive projects with discipline, creating long-term value and continuing to build momentum towards fossil freedom," says Anne Mette Traberg, Country Manager Denmark at Vattenfall.

Following the signing, Vattenfall will continue the development of both projects in close cooperation with authorities and stakeholders as they progress. Any future decision to construct the projects remains subject to final investment decisions and relevant approvals.

About the projects:

  • Hesselø: Minimum capacity of 800 MW, located in the Kattegat.
  • Holmsland: Minimum capacity of 1,000 MW, located in the North Sea near Hvide Sande.
  • Combined minimum capacity: 1.8 GW
  • Expected commissioning: 2032
