Environmental, social and governance (ESG) ratings

Vattenfall is assessed by several sustainability rating agencies on our ESG performance. 

ESG ratings are becoming increasingly important to both our investors and our business customers. We want to be as open and transparent as possible in our sustainability reporting and we are proud to be highly ranked for our sustainability performance.

The table below shows the agencies we are actively working with and our latest ratings.

CDP The leading system globally for disclosing environmental data for investors, companies, cities, states and regions. B. A-level rating achieved in 14 of 16 sub-categories. The overall score did not reach A-level due to a key CDP requirement: offering incentives to C-suite executives. Swedish regulations for state-owned companies prohibit salary bonuses for such roles, preventing full compliance. April 2025
EcoVadis An online platform that enables companies to monitor the CSR performance of their supply chains by providing supplier sustainability ratings. Platinum rating: top 1% in the energy sector. April 2025

ISS ESG ESG rating mainly for the investment community. The assessment spans over a range of ESG issues that are analysed on the basis of up to to 100 rating critera, most of them sector specific. B “Prime”: highest decile of companies assessed in the sector. December 2022
MSCI ESG rating mainly for the investment community. Uses a rules-based methodology to identify industry leaders and laggards. Ranks companies according to their ESG risk exposure and how well they manage those risks relative to peers. AAA “Leads peers in decarbonisation measures”: meaning top 13% of companies assessed in the sector. December 2024
Sustainalytics ESG rating mainly for the investment community. Uses a two-dimensional materiality framework that measures a company’s exposure to industry-specific material risks and how well a company is managing those risks. ESG risk rating: Medium (Strong management score and high exposure). Top 50% of companies in subindustry. July 2025
World Benchmarking Alliance The Electric Utilities Benchmark 2023 ranks 68 keystone electric utility companies based on an Assessing low-Carbon Transition (ACT) assessment and a social assessment comprising Core Social and Just Transition Indicators. The overall score reflects the company’s alignment with the low-carbon transition and its commitment to social equity throughout the process. 51.6 / 100, number 7 out of 68 companies ranked in 2023.
