Vattenfall Disability Days: Raising awareness to see the unseen

The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is on 3 December. Vattenfall decided to shine a light on this important topic, through digital events and by raising awareness about people with different mental and physical abilities at work.

In line with this year’s UN theme, Vattenfall is focused on “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.” Empowerment starts with visibility of seen and unseen disability because not all mental and physical disabilities are immediately visible. Neurodiversity, for example, recognises that everyone’s thinking process is individual. We might not see that a person has autism or ADHD, but to create inclusive environments in which everyone can reach their full potential, we need to remove barriers, accommodate and include everyone. If we learn to see, we can make our world more accessible.

Vattenfall Communications has released internal accessibility guidelines to meet European legislation requiring newly marketed digital products and services to meet stricter accessibility standards from 2025 onwards. Its aim is to guarantee equal access for everyone. 3 digital event initiatives around 3 December were organized. The focus was on topics from digital accessibility basics and how Vattenfall is transforming their digital platforms to talent with a disability and creating disability-inclusive workplaces.

At our Amsterdam office, there were virtual reality experiences enabling colleagues to experience the barriers some people face. Our colleagues in Poland had different webinars and events in Polish about disability at work with internal and external experts. The Vattenfall Disability Days were also an opportunity to sign up employees for the Vattenfall Signs initiative, a sign language learning programme, through which a basic level of training in British and International Sign Language will be offered to the future Vattenfall Signs Ambassadors, local ambassador for the hard of hearing at the company.
