Our Vattenfall Ethnicity Days started at the end of October and continued into early November. In the spotlight: Ethnicity and Worldview at work, with a special focus on recognising Black History Month and also Diwali, which is celebrated by over 1.1 billion Hindus across the world and also at Vattenfall. Vattenfall is dedicated to supporting and increasing diverse representation.
What is ethnicity?
Members of an ethnicity or ethnic group are identified based on shared attributes such as language, place of origin, family history or belief system. It is a social construct representing a sense of common ancestry and traditions.
Celebrating Vattenfall Ethnicity Days 2024
As our company grows increasingly diverse, acknowledging and respecting individual identities is not just a choice but a responsibility. By celebrating differences, we aim to foster greater understanding and appreciation of the unique perspectives that enrich our workplace. Our Vattenfall Ethnicity Days programme included something for everyone: Two digital workshops, one about the importance and value add of having different ethnicities in the workplace, the other about the history of slavery. We also shared a recorded keynote on DEI and responsible AI and had many on-site Diwali celebrations across our markets.
Ethnicity & Worldview at Vattenfall
At Vattenfall, 83 nationalities create a rich mosaic of cultural backgrounds, languages, experiences and perspectives. Below, we have a few of the ways we are actively working on inclusion and our representation:
- The Vattenfall Licence to Hire e-learning aims to equip managers to hire diverse talent and is available on different platforms to all curious Vattenfall employees.
- In Germany, we have started a partnership with Workeer, an agency representing skilled people with refugee status, so we can broaden our potential talent pool.
- In the UK, we now have a partnership with Niya. Vattenfall has sponsored a cohort of minority status women to retrain and upskill, creating a pathway to employment and better job prospects.
- Vattenfall Language Cafés, employee resource groups, in location enable us to practise foreign language skills, creating better intercultural connection and inclusion.
Stephanie Hinton-James, Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion at Vattenfall:
“We know inclusion is a human right and as such Ethnicity and Worldview, which encompass a rich tapestry of cultures, languages, traditions, experiences and identities, are also protected characteristics under the law. At Vattenfall, we all have a role to play and a responsibility to ensure identity is not a barrier to full participation, opportunity and progression at work. Education and awareness are the first steps we can take to ensure we are open to all differences and are positive in recognising the value add it brings to both our culture and business. The DEI Office and Diverse Energy Networks are committed to taking meaningful and measurable positive action to ensure our experience principles are a lived reality for everyone. We are all individuals and together we are Vattenfall.“
