First turbine installed at Vattenfall’s offshore wind farm Horns Rev 3

The first turbine at Vattenfall’s offshore wind farm Horns Rev 3 has been installed in the North Sea off the west coast of Denmark. The wind farm will increase Danish annual electricity production from wind by about 12 per cent and cover the consumption of approximately 425,000 Danish households.

First turbine installed at Horns Rev 3

Thursday evening July 19, the first of 49 turbines at Horns Rev 3 was installed. This is the first time in five years a new offshore wind farm is being constructed in Denmark.

"We are pleased to have started installing the turbines at Denmark's next offshore wind farm. Horns Rev 3 is a significant step towards a fossil free future for both Vattenfall and Denmark. The construction of the wind farm is a large operation that involves many ships and different jobs. We are very careful about the safety of the staff, and I'm happy that the work is progressing well," says Martin Zappe, Project Director at Horns Rev 3.

Horns Rev 3 will increase the Danish annual electricity generation from wind by about 12 per cent. The turbines are produced by MHI Vestas and shipped from Port of Esbjerg on the west coast of Denmark. The installation of the turbines is expected to last until November and the farm is expected to be in full operation at the beginning of 2019.

Vattenfall is Denmark's largest offshore wind developer. In addition to Horns Rev 3, Vattenfall is developing the offshore wind farms Vesterhav Syd & Nord in the North Sea and Kriegers Flak in the Baltic Sea.

About Horns Rev 3 Offshore Wind Farm

  •  With an installed capacity of 406 MW and an expected annual production of 1,700 GWh, Horns Rev 3 will cover the annual consumption of approx. 425,000 Danish households.
  •  The turbines stand on a foundation of steel weighing up to 600 tonnes each. A total of over 40,000 tonnes of steel have been used for the foundations.
  •  With a rotor diameter of 164 metres, the total height of the turbines is 187 metres and each turbine weighs close to 1,500 tonnes including foundation.
  •  The Horns Rev 3 wind farm is located in the North Sea 25-40 kilometres off the Danish west coast.
