We believe that a diverse workforce accelerates our progress towards achieving our goal: fossil freedom.
At Vattenfall, our commitment to fossil freedom is inseparable from our commitment to people. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are embedded in our core strategy, ensuring that diverse perspectives drive innovation and better decision-making. We aim to be the most inclusive workplace in the energy industry, creating an environment where every individual acts as a unique contributor to a sustainable future.
The principles guiding our approach are based on the concepts of ‘Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)’. ‘Diversity’ reflects the unique individuals and perspectives within Vattenfall. ‘Equity’ involves actively ensuring fairness and removing barriers. ‘Inclusion’ means creating a culture where everyone feels valued and can contribute.

Vattenfall employees differ in so many ways but they are connected by their desire to make a difference.
At Vattenfall, our DEI strategy focuses on embedding DEI principles into every stage of the employee lifecycle, ensuring these values permeate all processes, programmes, and systems.
Guided by our core values – Open, Active, Positive, and Safety – we foster an inclusive culture through initiatives such as training, workshops, and the continuous improvement of recruitment and HR practices. To ensure accountability and systemic impact, we rely on a structured governance model anchored at the highest levels of the organisation.
Our chief diversity officer sits within the Executive Group Management team, ensuring sponsorship and visibility at the top management level. This position rotates every two years, a strategy designed to embed diversity and inclusion into the core of our corporate culture and decision-making processes.
Central to these efforts is our dedicated DEI office. Led by the DEI director, this office is responsible for the governance and steering of DEI across Vattenfall, developing company-wide strategies and aligning inclusive practices with our sustainability goals. This framework is further complemented by the activities of our employee resource groups, which support the engagement and rollout of initiatives across all markets.
Our vision remains simple: to ensure equal opportunity and drive progress, making diversity, equity, and inclusion an integral part of everything we do.
"For me, DEI is not an additional programme outside of everyday business. It is fundamental in our organisation and for our business success that everyone be treated fairly and given equal opportunity."
Jonas Bengtsson, General Counsel and Secretary to the Board of Directors, and responsible for Corporate Security & Resilience. Chief diversity officer (2025-2027)
"Building a dynamic and forward-thinking organisation depends on embodying the diversity of the world around us and on creating opportunities to leverage each person's unique skills and expertise to the fullest."
Stephanie Hinton-James, Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Our approach to DEI is grounded in a thorough understanding of diversity across multiple dimensions. Vattenfall recognises six dimensions of diversity, which intersect and interact, shaping unique individual experiences.
By embedding these dimensions into all aspects of our work, we foster an inclusive culture that drives innovation and growth. This intersectional perspective underpins our commitment across every level of the organisation, creating an environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to thrive and contribute to our shared ambitions.
To ensure accountability and drive impact, Vattenfall tracks progress through groupwide measures focused on gender balance and inclusive culture.

At Vattenfall, advancing gender equality is a key part of building a more inclusive and sustainable energy future. As a signatory of the Equal by 30 initiative, we are committed to creating equal opportunities, empowering women to lead, innovate, and thrive at every level of our organisation.
Equal by 30 is a global commitment to gender equality in the energy sector. Vattenfall joined in 2018.
Beyond representation, we measure the health of our culture through the DEI Index. This metric is derived from targeted questions in our voluntary and anonymous My Opinion employee survey. It captures employees’ perceptions of how actively managers support and drive DEI, while also assessing their personal sense of inclusion and the freedom to be their authentic selves at work. The latest DEI Index is 88%.
