All foundations for Horns Rev 3 are now in place

The 49 foundations, which are to carry Denmark's largest wind farm, Horns Rev 3, are now in place in the North Sea north-west of Blåvands Huk on the Danish west coast. The last foundation was piled  into the seabed just after New Year and the construction process of the farm is on schedule.

Since mid-October, the installation vessel ‘Innovation’ has carried out the installation of the foundations, which has progressed without major challenges. The farm will be in full operation and ready to cover 425,000 Danish households' annual electricity consumption by 2020.

"The installation of the last foundation marks an important milestone for the project. And while the weather gods have not always favoured us, the installation and transportation of foundations have been without major challenges and not one single accident," says Martin Zappe, Project Director for Horns Rev 3, and continues:

"The construction process is progressing as planned, which we are of course pleased with. This is due to a professional project team and good cooperation with our partners".

The next step, which will commence by the end of spring, will be to install the transition pieces between the foundation and the turbine tower. After this, the installation of the towers can begin.

In addition to Horns Rev 3, Vattenfall will over the coming years develop the wind farms Danish Kriegers Flak, Vesterhav Syd and Vesterhav Nord. Together, these farms will increase Danish electricity production from wind power by more than one fifth and cover more than 1.5 million Danish households’ annual electricity consumption.

This makes Vattenfall Denmark's largest developer of wind power. In total, Vattenfall invests more than 20 billion DKK in Denmark's green transition.

Facts about Horns Rev 3

The farm will consist of 49 turbines with a combined generation capacity of 406 MW. The farm will cover approximately 425,000 Danish households' annual electricity consumption.

The foundations consist of a 40-50 metres long steel monopile with a diameter of 6.5 metres and weight of up to 610 tons.

The 8.3 MW turbines will be produced by MHI Vestas and is one of the world's most powerful wind turbine models today.

The turbines are 187 metres high with a rotor diameter of 164 metres.

Vattenfall won the tender for the construction of Horns Rev 3 in 2015, and the farm will be in full operation by 2020.
