New Berlin office under construction at Südkreuz, Berlin

Sustainable and innovative office building for more than 2,000 Vattenfall employees under construction at Südkreuz, Berlin.

In 2021, Vattenfall's new Berlin headquarters will bring together more than 2,000 employees under one roof at Südkreuz in the Berlin-Schöneberg district. Besides the state-of-the-art, sustainable design, proximity to public transport connections, motorways and airports was also a major factor in the decision in favour of the selected location.

Tuomo Hatakka, Country Manager for Germany: "This is a special day, and I'm delighted we've now found a new office location at Südkreuz, Berlin. Huge changes are sweeping through the entire energy sector. We have actively helped to shape this process for several years now. Developing a modern work environment and culture is a key element of this and the next logical step. For this reason, we've placed high demands on our new base in terms of the sustainability of the building and efficient, modern facilities. We've found a highly regarded project and technology developer as our partner to meet these demands. In deciding on the new building, we're sending a clear signal in favour of Germany and Berlin as a location."

In the new building, employees will be able to find the right working environment for any particular activity. There will be a team "home base" with standard desks but on top of that, the employees will find a wide selection of places for example for concentrated working, making phone calls, video conferences, meetings and much more.

All together in one location

More than 2,000 employees of Vattenfall and the subsidiary Stromnetz Berlin will work at the new location. All administrative and support functions and employees from operational units of subsidiaries will come together under one roof further reducing the annual cost base through the consolidation of administrative functions in a single location. The building is scheduled to be completed and handed over to Vattenfall by the end of 2020 with an initial lease period of ten years. Once the new accommodation has been fitted out and furnished, the employees are scheduled to move in during 2021.

Sustainable building

The new ecological and sustainable office complex will be designed for optimal energy balance, with state-of-the-art digital facilities and comprehensive e-mobility charging infrastructure for the fleet of vehicles.

The wood hybrid construction is a combination of recyclable wood and concrete and enables the CO2emissions involved in the construction of the shell to be reduced by up to 80 per cent compared to conventional reinforced concrete construction. The amount of concrete is kept at a minimum, and the use of wood also helps create a healthy room climate. The energy will be supplied from three combined heat and power units.

Clear commitment to Hamburg and Berlin as locations

Vattenfall also plans to create a future-oriented and sustainable building in Hamburg for more than 1000 employees. The decision for the new Hamburg headquarters is scheduled for the second half of 2018, also aiming for a moving date during 2021. In this way, Vattenfall is demonstrating a clear commitment to the two cities as locations.
