Northumberland wind farm hits full power

Vattenfall’s 54.4MW Ray Wind Farm, in the north east of England, is fully operationalthe Swedish energy company said today.

The 16 wind turbines will produce on average every year enough fossil-fuel free power to meet the equivalent annual demand of over 30,000 UK households.

Ray Wind Farma Vattenfall investment of around £90million, is located on the Ray Estate, near Kirkwhelpington in Northumberland. It is the second Vattenfall UK wind farm to be finished in recent weeks. In early May, Pen y Cymoedd in Wales produced power from all 76 turbines.

Gunnar Groebler, Vattenfall’s Head of Business Area Wind, said: “Vattenfall continues to grow its wind business in the UK with Ray Wind Farm now fully operationaljust a few weeks after its bigger sister – Pen y Cymoedd – hit the same target. I would like to congratulate Vattenfall colleagues and contractors for a job safely done, on time and to budget.”

Reflecting on the UK General Election, Gunnar added: “We have been encouraged by cross party support for determined action on climate change in the General Election. We’re convinced that onshore wind can and will help keep energy bills down for consumers and businesses, whilst driving clean economic growth.  That is why we continue to develop good projects in the UK.”

Construction on Ray Wind Farm commenced at the end of July 2015 with Scottish civil engineering firm RJ McLeod’s preparing the site for 16 Senvion 3.4M104 wind turbines.
