Vattenfall responds to Government's Heat and Buildings Strategy

The UK Government has just published its Heat and Buildings Strategy, which sets out a plan for decarbonising heating in the UK.

Initiatives highlighted in the strategy include:

  • by 2035, all new heating systems installed in UK homes to be low carbon
  • plans to drive down the cost of heat pumps and ensure low-carbon heating technologies are no more expensive to buy or run than fossil fuel boilers; and
  • grants to incentivise households to install low-carbon heating solutions.

Mark Anderson, Director of Sales and Marketing at Vattenfall Heat UK, said:

“Ministers should be applauded for recognising that the only way to revolutionise how we heat our homes and businesses is to support consumers with a long-term, affordable plan. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution to decarbonising heating however, so Government, local authorities, developers and the supply chain need to identify which technologies will work best in different parts of the country, ensuring they can be delivered cost-effectively.

“Multiple technologies are ready to be deployed, such as district heating in densely populated areas. The best way forward is to create a market for those solutions now. Hydrogen has great potential to remove emissions from hard-to-treat sectors – possibly including space heating – but the priority must be to roll out solutions which are ready to go.”
