Vattenfall Heat UK has appointed a brand-new Director of Heat Networks - London, Alina Gheorghiu-Currie, to take forward low carbon heating initiatives across the city, helping London to achieve its net zero ambitions through the creation of district heating and cooling networks.

Vattenfall is currently working on two different district heating developments in London. At Brent Cross, Vattenfall is working in partnership with developer Related Argent to design and construct a district heating network for 6,700 new homes and three million square feet of commercial space. In southeast London, Vattenfall is also working in partnership with Cory to develop the Riverside Heat Network that will capture waste heat for use by 21,000 existing buildings and homes in the first two phases.

Alina brings 20 years of experience in renewable infrastructure investment, social impact, and finance and accounting, including experience at the Green Investment Bank, and is a strong believer in applying diversity of thought to problem solving and decision making. She is passionate about working at the forefront of sustainable and low carbon investment to deliver positive and long-term outcomes for people and the planet.

Low Carbon District heating captures the huge volume of unused heat present in urban areas and uses it to warm offices and homes, without the need to burn more fossil fuels. It reduces carbon emissions and creates significant benefits for businesses and communities, as Vattenfall is committed to high quality customer experience and fair pricing. One third of UK emissions come from heating, and district heating networks are an essential means of decarbonising heating and hot water on a city scale.

Jenny Curtis, Managing Director at Vattenfall Heat UK said:

"I am delighted to announce Alina Gheorghiu-Currie as our Director of Heat Networks - London at Vattenfall Heat UK. This is a proud and exciting moment as we expand a dedicated team to serve London. Heat networks are best suited to cities and Vattenfall is already on the ground in London developing our Brent Cross Town & Riverside Heat Network. Vattenfall is ready to partner with the Greater London Authority, London boroughs, commercial organisations and communities across London to free the city from fossil-fuelled heating.”

Alina Gheorghiu-Currie, Director of Heat Networks - London at Vattenfall Heat UK said:

“The heating industry is transforming, as low carbon solutions are not only delivering on the net zero energy transition, but are also providing reliable heating and hot water at a fair price. Although challenges remain for district heating and cooling developments in the UK and London, Vattenfall is delivering on the ground and see material opportunities to build and expand our networks in the coming years.

“I am pleased to take on the new Director of Heat Networks - London role for Vattenfall Heat UK, to support the brilliant Vattenfall team, and with our partners, to deliver further investment in London’s low carbon infrastructure for our clients.  At Vattenfall we are committed to building a future where everyone can live fossil free.”
