Vattenfall IDNO has record year of electrifying UK businesses

  • Vattenfall IDNO (Independent Distribution Network Operator) has electrified more projects in 2024 than in any other year since its operations began in 2021.
  • In 2024, a total of 20 projects have been electrified, showcasing the impact of Vattenfall IDNO on reducing carbon emissions for UK businesses.
  • The new Grid Connections Consultancy service, launched this year, helps developers secure timely grid connections.

2024 has been Vattenfall IDNO’s most successful year in the UK to date. Partnering with leading Independent Connection Providers, they have electrified 20 new projects during the year.

The projects supported include powering Aldi supermarkets, a whiskey distillery in Falkirk, connecting schools to the electricity grid, supporting EV charging at Volvo car showrooms, and connecting electric buses to power in Twickenham. Vattenfall IDNO also powered Europe's largest river source heat pump at Clockhouse Farm in Kent, which is reducing CO2 emissions from UK tomato production.

Vattenfall IDNO provides fast, cost-efficient grid connections. This is crucial not only for providing power to schools, transport providers, and businesses but also for contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions. Connecting to the electricity grid means reducing reliance on gas and oil for heating, power, and lighting projects.

Securing a timely grid connection is critical to an efficient and clean electricity system. Vattenfall IDNO provides expert advice to help developers get their grid connection applications approved quickly. Our new Grid Connections Consultancy service enables developers to pinpoint the power available near their location using Vattenfall’s Grid Capacity Insights Platform. By supporting developers in this way and preparing grid applications with the highest chances of approval, Vattenfall IDNO has been able to help a growing number of developers avoid grid connection delays and accelerate connection timeframes.

In 2025, Vattenfall IDNO plans to partner with even more businesses to help them connect to the grid, reduce their carbon footprint, and continue on the journey toward Net Zero.

About Vattenfall IDNO

Vattenfall IDNO provides electrical grid connections for large, commercial projects. They offer an alternative to working with local DNOs (Distribution Network Operator) and pay business owners and developers an Asset Adoption Value. They work with developers and Independent Connection Providers (ICPs) to design safe, reliable electrical networks and connect business to the UK grid. Once these local networks are built, they own and operate the electrical infrastructure which takes the electricity from the national transmission or distribution network to the businesses which consume the power. They also connect electricity generators to the grid including solar and wind farms.
