Our business model

It takes several steps for electricity and heat to reach the end consumers and Vattenfall is present throughout the full value chain in accordance with our strategy as an integrated utility. Our business model is centred around creating value for our stakeholders.

Vattenfall contributes to the electricity generation and supply system with its portfolio of hydro and nuclear power, strong growth in large-scale renewables such as wind, solar power, and battery facilities as well as regional and local grids. Also, decentralised solutions with solar PV panels, electric vehicle charging solutions, battery storage, smart meters, and network services are offered to our customers.

Our district heating supply is based on the operation of some large, combined heat and power plants (CHPs), but in order to drive the move towards decarbonisation of the heating sector, we are widening the use of decentralised and flexible energy solutions, including mini-CHPs, heat pumps, storage options, solar panel installations, and third-party excess heat infeed.

UN's Sustainable Development Goals

Vattenfall’s activities contribute to the achievement of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are a collection of 17 global goals that were adopted in 2015 by more than 150 countries. Though adopted by governments, our strong belief is that businesses and industries play a decisive role in the extent to which these goals are achieved.

In 2016, we identified six SDGs that are the most relevant for Vattenfall and where we can have the greatest global impact, these goals remain valid internally and for our stakeholders, and they are reflected in our strategy.

Vattenfall also contributes to many other SDGs, including those in support of human rights, both at a local level and indirectly through our supply chain.
