Renewable Energy Scheme consultation kicks off

  • Consultation for renewable energy project Mynydd Lluest y Graig kicks off with communities invited to a series of events in November to discuss early thinking and designs of the project
  • A 3D virtual model of the project will be available for residents to see what the project could look like from local homes and villages
  • Online consultation will also be available with proposals currently looking at wind, solar and storage options on the site

An invitation to local informal consultation events has been sent by energy company Vattenfall to local residents as it begins developing plans for its Mynydd Lluest y Graig renewable energy scheme.

The project – located near Llanerfyl – is exploring the potential for wind and solar generation and energy storage at the site and is currently at an early stage of development.

The project could include up to 135 MW of renewable energy capacity, and produce enough electricity to power 90,000[i] homes.

At the events, local residents will be able to find out more about the research and assessment work that is being completed to inform the design of the site, and explore a 3D model of the initial design of the project to see what it could look like.

The online portal for the first phase of consultation will open on the 9 November and will run until 30 November. Local consultations are being held at:

  • 2pm – 7pm, Tuesday, 15 November -  Llanerfyl Village Hall, SY21 OEG
  • 10am – 2pm, Wednesday, 16 November - Adfa Village Hall, SY16 3DB
  • 3.30pm – 6.30pm, Wednesday, 16 November - Carno Community Centre, SY17 5LH
  • 10am – 2pm, Thursday, 17 November - Llanfair Caereinion Institute, SY21 ORY
  • 10am – 2pm, Saturday, 19 November - Llanbrynmair Community Centre, SY19 7DJ

Jonathan Hewett, Project Manager for the scheme said:

“We’re looking forward to talking to local residents about our initial ideas for the project and its potential. Experts working on the project will be on hand to answer questions, and we’re also open to ideas on what opportunities the community want to see us explore to bring the maximum benefits and opportunities locally – whether it’s shared ownership, schemes to help communities with their energy needs for the future or ideas for local projects that could be brought to life.”

Early consultation on the proposal comes at a time when leaders from across the world meet in Egypt for COP 27 to discuss urgent measures to tackle climate change, while there is increasing focus in the UK on securing domestic energy supplies.
